My girl from Liverpool is not a girl. It is the city of Liverpool. A sense of loss, a feeling as bittersweet as life in the city. It is the spirit of a lost revolution, a fight for rights. What is gone forever and will never be back. “When you die, not if you lie, with the angels you will fly,” they sing. It is an ode to the ’60s, a lover gone.
In contrast (or parallel, if you prefer) the city in the Gulps’ video of ‘My Girl from Liverpool’ is actually Paris, where youth revolution started in 1968. But the fears and nightmares are from today: eerie businessmen with dollar signs on their faces and a Pussy Riot girl running away from it all are just some of the many evocative images in this amazing video.
